Is There Anything Wrong With Asking For Your Coffee Ni66er Brown?
10th November 2015
Should the co-worker who was offended have just turned around and told her that she found it offensive or that she shouldn't really use that kind of language - wouldn't that be better all round?
Would this have been instant dismissal in the private sector?
Could there be criminal charges?
Please discuss.
A social worker who asked for her coffee to be made 'n***** brown' escaped with a caution after a panel accepted she was only referring to the strength of her hot drink.
Nichola Taylor was working for Stoke Council when she made the racist remark in a communal kitchen.
A colleague was so concerned she made a note of it and raised the matter with bosses who launched an investigation, prompting Taylor's dismissal last year.
Taylor had worked for Stoke Council since September 2007 and was appointed to the position of operational lead within the authority's Learning Disabilities Team in May 2011.
She was in a communal kitchen when the colleague asked how she liked her coffee on December 11, 2013, the Health and Care Professions Council heard.
'Ms Taylor told her colleague that she would like her coffee 'n*****-brown',' said Tom Orpin-Massey for the HCPC.

Of course it is an actual colour, but what a bizarre thing to say.

a relation of mine raised eyes in the boardroom of the place he worked by refering to a recalcitant probelm as
"the ni66er in the wood pile"
just shows people dont know their history...

as to te OP...i dont think she did anything wrong, as HF said perhaps unwise, but since she wasnt using the term in any form of abusiveness, then whats the problem....

I didn't actually know that VOD!
I thought the girl had been naughty but now i know this i don't understand why she has received a warning.
They even said she was just referring to the colour but still clearly felt the need to give a warning.

That happened in a place where I worked once. To make it worse, the person said it to a black man. They were mates though so they both fell about laughing.

I've never heard the word used to describe the colour of one's coffee though.

Because we don't see the colour ni66er brown any more i guess.
Maybe this woman still uses the term, and who are we to stop her?
It is quite clear that the term is dying out - fair enough, but let it die out naturally.
Same for acceptance of other things - don't force people by using shame and the law, let people live their own lives for god's sake.

It's not a term I'm familiar with, but maybe it's a local thing re where she's from. I would have thought that anyone under the age of 90 or so would know that it's not a good idea to use that word, regardless of the situation - unless they're talking about Guy Gibson's dog or the Agatha Christie novel. I think it would have been enough for someone to say to her - that's not a good term to use really, just be careful what you're saying.

I agree with that. That should always be the first action - it was the army's policy - if you feel confident enough to approach the person who has offended you.
That should be the same for someone being sexist, overly friendly etc - not grabbing boobs randomly of course, i'm talking about jokes.

A word on its own can never be RACIST, in my opinion.
